The Weekend in Sports

This weekend in sports was a historic one. The madness began on Friday, where Mississippi States Women's team took on the undefeated Connecticut Huskies. In the final play of over-time and the game Mississippi State guard Morgan William's hit a last second buzzer-beater to end a 111 game winning streak by Connecticut. After Friday's crazy finish, Saturday had big shows to fill. Saturday began with an upset in the English Premier League where league leaders Chelsea lost to a resilient Crystal Palace team 2-1 with goals from Wilfred Zaha and Christian Benteke.
The late afternoon belonged to the Final Four. The opening game between South Carolina and Gonzaga turned out to be a great game. In the end the fundamental ability to finish a game propelled Gonzaga into its first title game. The second semi-final game between North Carolina between and Oregon also was a good game, but ended in dramatic fashion. In the final five seconds of the game, North Carolina missed four free-throws. Both times, North Carolina out-rebounded the Ducks and allowed for the clock to run out allowing them to return to the National Championship game.
Sunday was a great day for a lot of people. Sunday was opening day for the new baseball season. On the opening day for the defending champion Chicago Cubs, things did not go as planned as they lost in walk-off fashion to their rival St. Louis Cardinals. Also Sunday played host to the National Championship game for college women's basketball. In an all SEC matchup South Carolina's women's team defeated Mississippi State to win their first championship in program history.
All in all, it was a great weekend in sports.

Until next time,

The Third
